The Switch 2 will not accept an ordinary microSD card. It reads microSD Express only, a different standard that runs over PCIe and NVMe instead of the older UHS-I bus, so the card from your first Switch is no help here.

This 256GB SanDisk card is built for that slot: up to 880MB/s read, up to 650MB/s write, and a 210MB/s sustained write floor, which keeps large downloads and installs moving.

It still drops into a phone or a camera, just at ordinary UHS-I speeds.

Questions & answers

Will a normal microSD card work in the Switch 2?

No. The Switch 2 reads microSD Express cards only. A standard UHS-I card, including the SanDisk Ultra 128GB sold here, will be rejected by the console for game storage.

How many games does 256GB hold?

It depends heavily on the title. Big Switch 2 releases run into the tens of gigabytes each, so plan on roughly eight to twelve large downloads, or far more indie and eShop games.

Do I need to format it first?

Insert it with the console powered off, then start the system. The Switch 2 prompts you to format the card for use, which takes a few seconds and erases anything already on it.

Can I use it in a phone, camera or laptop reader?

Yes. The card falls back to the standard microSD UHS-I interface in devices that do not support Express, so it works, just at UHS-I speeds rather than 880MB/s.

Where does the card slot sit on the Switch 2?

Behind the kickstand on the back of the console. Open the stand, push the card in until it clicks, and close the stand again.
