Bose built its reputation on noise cancellation, and these are the in-ear version of that argument. CustomTune plays a tone at startup, measures how your ear canal responds and adjusts both the cancellation and the sound to the shape it finds, so the seal matters less than it does on most earbuds.

Immersive Audio is the other headline. It places the music outside your head, anchored in the room rather than between your ears, and head tracking keeps it there when you turn. It costs battery, so it is a switch rather than a default.

Questions & answers

Do they work with an iPhone, an Android phone and a laptop?

Yes. They pair over standard Bluetooth with iPhone, Android, Windows and Mac, and multipoint keeps two of those connected at once. aptX Adaptive needs a Snapdragon Sound Android phone; everything else falls back to AAC or SBC.

Why does the battery drop when Immersive Audio is on?

The spatial processing and head tracking run continuously on the earbuds. Expect around four hours with it enabled against six with it off. It can be switched per source in the Bose app.

Can I run or work out in them?

The IPX4 rating covers sweat and rain, and the stability bands hold them in place. They are not rated for swimming or for immersion of any kind.

What is CustomTune and do I need to set it up?

No setup is needed. Each time you put them in, a short tone measures your ear canal and the earbuds adjust cancellation and frequency response to it automatically.

How do they compare with the QuietComfort Ultra Headphones?

The over-ear model runs far longer per charge and cancels a little more low-frequency noise. The earbuds win on portability and are the better choice for exercise and commuting.
