Questions & answers

Do I need an iPhone for these to work?

Yes. Setup and tracking run through the Find My app on an iPhone or iPad signed in to an Apple Account. Android phones cannot set one up, though they can detect an unknown tracker moving with them.

How do I attach one to my keys?

There is no hole in the disc, so it needs a keyring holder, loop or adhesive mount. Wallets and suitcase pockets take one loose, which is what most of a four-pack ends up doing.

How long does the battery last, and can I change it?

Apple rates it at more than a year. When it runs low you get a notification, then twist the stainless back off, drop in a standard CR2032 coin cell and twist it shut.

Can I put one in checked luggage?

Yes, and Find My can generate a temporary Share Item Location link that participating airlines can open to help locate a delayed bag. The tracker only transmits over Bluetooth, so it is fine in the hold.

Could somebody use one to follow me?

Both iOS and Android warn you when an unknown tracker travels with you, and the tracker will start beeping on its own after a period away from its owner. You can then tap it with your phone to see its serial number.
