The Artisan is the tilt-head KitchenAid most home bakers end up with. A 325-watt motor drives ten speeds through planetary mixing action, so the beater travels around the bowl as it turns and reaches the flour that would otherwise sit untouched at the edge.

The head tilts back to swap the flat beater, dough hook or wire whip and to scrape the bowl down without fighting the machine. The front power hub takes more than ten optional attachments, from a pasta roller to a meat grinder, which is why one mixer tends to outlive the kitchen it was bought for.

Questions & answers

Can it knead bread dough?

Yes. The coated spiral dough hook handles standard yeast doughs up to roughly nine cups of flour, run on speed 2. Stiff, low-hydration doughs can make a tilt-head mixer walk on the counter, so keep an eye on it.

How is the Artisan different from the Classic?

The Artisan steps up to a 5-quart bowl with a handle and a 325-watt motor, against the Classic's smaller bowl and lower-powered motor. It also comes in the full color range rather than white and silver only.

Which attachments fit the power hub?

The hub on the front is the same fitting used across KitchenAid's tilt-head and bowl-lift mixers, so pasta rollers, food grinders, spiralizers, shredders and the ice cream bowl all attach to this model.

Can the bowl and beater go in the dishwasher?

The stainless bowl, coated flat beater and coated dough hook are all dishwasher safe. KitchenAid recommends washing the six-wire whip by hand to protect the wires and the collar.

Does the head stay down while it is mixing?

Yes. A lever on the side locks the head in the down position so it does not lift under load. You release the lever to tilt back for scraping or changing tools.
