Rain-X bonds to the glass surface and changes how water behaves on it. Above roughly 35 mph the beads lift and blow off the windshield on their own, so the wipers do less work and the view stays clear in heavy rain.

One 12-ounce bottle treats a windshield many times over, and the same coating works on side glass, mirrors, helmet visors and shower doors. Apply it to clean, dry glass, let the film haze, then buff it off with a dry cloth. Reapply when beading starts to slow.

Questions & answers

Does it help in city driving at low speed?

The self-clearing effect needs airflow, so it is strongest on the highway. Below about 35 mph you still use the wipers, but water sheets off faster and the glass clears in fewer passes.

Can I put it on the inside of the windshield?

No, this is an exterior treatment and it will haze the inside of the glass. Use a dedicated anti-fog product for interior surfaces.

The windshield looks streaky after applying. What went wrong?

That is usually leftover residue that was not buffed off. Apply a small amount over the streaked area to soften it, then buff hard with a clean, dry microfiber cloth.

Will it damage wiper blades or window tint?

No. Applied to the outside of the glass it does not touch tint film, which is fitted inside, and the slicker surface actually reduces drag on the blades.

How often does it need redoing?

Plan on every few months. Heavy wiper use, automatic car washes and abrasive de-icing all wear the coating faster, and slower beading is the signal to recoat.
