The Pro is the version of Apple Pencil with sensors in the barrel. Squeeze it and a tool palette appears under the tip, so you swap brush, colour or line weight without reaching for a menu. Roll it between your fingers and a gyroscope turns the nib, which matters for calligraphy pens and flat brushes.

A haptic engine gives a small pulse when a squeeze or double tap registers. It snaps to the magnetic side of the iPad to pair and charge, hovers to preview a stroke before it lands, and shows up in Find My if it goes missing.

Questions & answers

Which iPads does it work with?

iPad Pro 13-inch and 11-inch with M4 or M5, iPad Air 13-inch and 11-inch with M2 or M3, and iPad mini (A17 Pro). Those are the models with the pencil magnets in the right place.

Will it work with the entry-level iPad?

No. The iPad (A16) takes the Apple Pencil (USB-C) instead, which pairs over a cable and does not support squeeze, barrel roll, haptics or pressure sensitivity.

How do I charge it?

Place it on the flat magnetic strip along the side of a supported iPad. It pairs on first contact and charges there, so there is no cable and no port on the pencil itself.

Can I replace the tip?

Yes. Tips unscrew by hand and Apple sells replacement four-packs. A worn tip usually shows up as a scratchy feel or a tip that no longer sits flush.

Does every app support squeeze and barrel roll?

System features like Scribble and the markup toolbar respond straight away. Squeeze palettes and nib rotation depend on the app; Procreate, Freeform, Notes and the major drawing apps have adopted them.
