Questions & answers

How is this different from the 14-inch M5 Pro?

Same chip options and the same port layout. The 16-inch adds screen area, a larger six-speaker chamber and a 100Wh battery instead of 72Wh, at about 1.3 lb more weight.

Can I add memory or storage later?

No. Unified memory and the SSD are soldered to the logic board and fixed at purchase. Plan for the life of the machine, or budget for external Thunderbolt storage.

What comes in the box?

The MacBook Pro, a USB-C to MagSafe 3 cable and a 140W USB-C power adapter. Charging also works over any of the Thunderbolt ports, just more slowly.

How many external displays will it drive?

Up to three alongside the built-in screen, at 6K and 60Hz over Thunderbolt 5, or three 4K panels at 144Hz. The HDMI port can take one of those on its own.

Is the M5 Max worth the step up?

Only for sustained GPU work: 3D rendering, heavy colour grading, large local AI models. For code, photography and most video editing the M5 Pro finishes the same jobs.
