The WashG1 is Dyson's first machine built purely for wet cleaning, and it works nothing like a vacuum. There is no suction motor at all. Two counter-rotating microfibre rollers do the work, fed by 26 hydration points that lay clean water down and then lift the dirty water straight back off the floor.

Wet and dry debris separate at the source. Crumbs and hair drop into a removable tray behind a 500-micron mesh while extracted water goes to its own tank, so nothing turns to sludge inside the machine.

One tank covers around 3,100 square feet, and a self-clean cycle rinses the rollers afterwards.

Questions & answers

Does it replace a vacuum?

Not on carpet or rugs, which it cannot be used on at all. On hard floors it picks up dry crumbs and hair alongside the wet cleaning, so many people run it instead of sweeping and mopping and keep a vacuum for the soft flooring.

Which floors is it safe on?

Sealed hard floors: tile, vinyl, laminate, stone and sealed hardwood. Keep it off carpet, rugs, unsealed wood and waxed floors.

Do I need to add a cleaning solution?

Dyson designed it around plain water, and that is what the tank and the pump are calibrated for. Detergents can foam inside the machine and clog the hydration points.

How much cleaning up does it need afterwards?

Empty the dirty water tank, tip out the debris tray, then run the self-clean cycle on the dock. The rollers and tray can also go in the dishwasher when they need a deeper wash.

How wet are the floors when it has been over them?

Barely damp. The rollers put down a thin film and the counter-rotation pulls most of it back immediately, so hard floors are usually dry within a couple of minutes.
