The Echo Dot Max is the first Dot built around a two-way speaker, pairing a 2.5-inch woofer with a 0.8-inch tweeter. Amazon rates it at roughly three times the bass of the fifth-generation Dot.

Inside is Amazon's AZ3 chip, which handles wake-word detection on the device and supports Alexa+, the conversational version of Alexa. Wi-Fi 6E and a built-in hub let it talk to Matter and Thread accessories directly.

It suits anyone who plays music on the speaker rather than just asking for timers, or who wants one device to run the lights as well.

Questions & answers

Do I need to pay for Alexa+?

Alexa+ is included at no extra cost with a Prime membership. Without Prime it is a paid monthly subscription, and the standard Alexa features work either way.

Can it replace a separate smart home hub?

For Matter and Thread accessories, yes — the Dot Max has the hub radios built in, so compatible lights, plugs and sensors join without a bridge. Older accessories that use a proprietary bridge still need it.

Can I pair two of them for stereo?

Two Echo Dot Max speakers in the same room can be grouped as a stereo pair in the Alexa app, and they can also be added to an Alexa Home Theater group with a compatible Fire TV.

Will it play music straight from my phone?

Yes. It pairs over Bluetooth as a speaker for anything playing on a phone, tablet or laptop, alongside the streaming services linked to your Alexa account.

Does it work with my older Echo speakers?

It does. You can add it to existing multi-room music groups and use it for drop-in and announcements alongside earlier Echo models.
